Safety and Buildings Division - Instructions for UDC Status List This page is meant to provide a gateway to several formats of a list of all Wisconsin's municipalities and their status on enforcement of the UDC. The Uniform Dwelling Code (UDC) is the statewide building code for one- and two-family dwellings built since June 1, 1980. Municipalities of greater than 2500 population have provided full UDC enforcement. The UDC applies to all new dwellings, whatever the status of enforcement. The UDC must be followed for new construction. Municipalities of less than 2500 population have had the option of whether or not to provide enforcement of the UDC. In some municipalities of less than 2500 population, enforcement has been by state-certified inspection agencies of the owner's choice. A law that went into effect December 18, 2003, provided for enforcement of the UDC statewide, regardless of a municipality's population. On April 21, there was a delay enacted for some muncipalities. See explanation on main UDC Program page. - UDC municipal enforcement status list (PDF file 350 KB) (Excel file 450 KB), sorted in alphabetical order of the counties. These files are large and may take some minutes to download. (Cities or villages that are in multiple counties are listed under the county in which their greatest portion is located.) S&B recommends verifying the enforcement status with the municipal clerk where the dwelling will be constructed. You can use your "CTRL" + "F" keys to search for a name in either format of the list. Be aware that multiple municipalities may share the same name. If you wish more information on PDF or Excel files (which can be viewed with software that are free downloads), choose "Explanation of File Formats" below. According to S&B records, if the municipality in the list has a "UDC" code of:
- MM or MV - There is municipal UDC enforcement. Contact the listed clerk for information on how to contact the building inspector.
- CM or CV - There is county UDC enforcement. Contact the county clerk for information on how to contact the building inspector.
- ST, UN, NOM - S&B has authority to enforce the UDC in these municipalities. This is done through state-certified inspection agencies chosen by the owner at this time. See List of UDC Inspection Agencies.
- SC - There are two municipalities for which the state has contracted with a private inspection firm for enforcement services. Contact the S&B inspection support unit at 608-266-2780.
- NO, CE - No enforcement at this time.
- N - No county-level enforcement
- Y - County-level enforcement
