State Homeless Shelter Subsidy Grants of $1.4 Million Announced

Governor Jim Doyle recently announced that 32 Wisconsin agencies will receive $1.4 million in awards through the State Shelter Subsidy Grant program administered by the Wisconsin Department of Commerce (Commerce).

"It is vitally important to help provide shelter for the homeless people of Wisconsin, particularly now with the dangerously low temperatures and bitter cold," Governor Doyle said. "Everyone in our state deserves a decent place to live, and I applaud the work of these agencies to provide these critical services."

The State Shelter Subsidy Grant Program was initiated by the Legislature in 1985. The grant provides up to 50 percent of the operating budget of a generic homeless shelter facility or homeless voucher program. The program is open to government agencies or private for-profit and non-profit agencies. These funds provide a consistent funding source on an annual basis for many of the smaller emergency programs.
