Commerce Plans to Adopt the 2008 National Electrical Code

Note: Headline was updated on 10/5 and is different than the headline included in the email version of the October 2006 Commerce Newsletter.

The Department of Commerce has adopted the National Electrical Code (NEC) which has been updated on a three-year cycle since 1971. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is in the process of accepting comments on the 2008 NEC. The department as well as interested parties in Wisconsin, including utilities, labor and contractor associations, have traditionally been strong proponents and contributors in the open process used in development of NFPA standards such as the NEC. Comments on proposals for the 2008 NEC will be accepted by NFPA until 5 p.m., ESDT, Friday, October 20, 2006. Additional information can be found at www.nfpa.org and following the links to Codes and Standards Development Process.

Commerce's Safety and Buildings Division will begin the adoption process for the 2008 NEC in August 2007. The Electrical Code Advisory Council (not currently active) will review the electrical code as well as proposed changes in the NEC prior to adoption proceeding in Wisconsin. This 11-member advisory council advises the department on issues and rules relating to the safeguarding of persons and property from hazards arising from the installation and use of electricity. The rules are currently contained in chapter Comm 16. A form for Code Change Proposals is available at commerce.wi.gov/SB/SB-DivForms.html. From this site click on General and scroll down to SBD 10503. Proposals to the department may be submitted at any time using the address on the form.
