Main Street Sponsors Downtown Revitalization Conference October 26

Wisconsin communities looking for ways to rejuvenate their downtowns should plan to attend "Recapturing Your Downtown", a downtown revitalization conference in Wausau on October 26, 2006. Sponsored by the Department of Commerce's Main Street Program, the conference will be held at the Jefferson Street Inn. Conference co-sponsors include the City of Wausau, Wisconsin Public Service, and the UW-Stevens Point (UWSP) Small Business Development Center.

The event features two keynote speakers, Lauren Adkins and Chris Clarke-Epstein.

Lauren Adkins, Program Officer, National Main Street Center, has worked with more than 100 communities in 28 states plus the District of Columbia and Singapore, providing technical assistance to small- and mid-sized communities, urban neighborhood districts, and for special projects. Adkins specializes in topics such as retail promotion, volunteer management, fund raising, market analysis and strategic planning. Her presentation "The Next 25 Years of Downtown Revitalization" will focus on trends in the field of downtown revitalization.

Chris Clarke-Epstein is a student of words, both spoken and written. She is a master of storytelling and a master of changes, both big and small. An award-winning speaker, trainer, and author, she has created and presented programs that inspire people to look at their world from a fresh perspective, apply new knowledge and make a change. In her presentation "Downtowns are Built on Intangibles," Epstein will help participants explore the real selling points of a downtown.

Conference breakout sessions will include topics on fund raising events, farmers' markets, downtown arts projects, affordable building rehabilitation projects, and business recruitment.

A Kick-Off Reception will be held on Wednesday, October 25, at the Performing Arts Center, 401 North Fourth Street, Wausau from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm.
