Abandoned Tanks Search Tool Now Available Online

A new tool has been added to the Department of Commerce (Commerce) web site allowing people to locate property with underground tanks that are currently registered as "abandoned." While similar information can be obtained through an existing tank search application, this application streamlines searches for people doing basic searches by county.

An "Abandoned Tank" is an underground petroleum or chemical storage tank that has not been properly closed by either removal or closure-in-place. Some tanks may have been removed, but the responsible party failed to adequately notify the department of the closure. The introduction to the search application explains administrative procedures for addressing abandoned tanks. The Internet link is: commerce.wi.gov/ER/ER-BST-AbandonUndergroundTanks.html.
