Governor Doyle Announces $1.1 Million in State Shelter Subsidy Grants

Governor Jim Doyle today announced that 39 Wisconsin agencies will receive $1.1 million in awards through the State Shelter Subsidy Grant program administered by the Wisconsin Department of Commerce.

Statewide, the grants will provide over 489,000 nights of shelter in 2006.

"With this funding, we are able to ensure that agencies throughout Wisconsin can continue to provide shelter for the homeless people of Wisconsin," Governor Doyle said. "Everyone in our state deserves a decent place to live, and I applaud the work of these agencies to provide these vital services."

The State Shelter Subsidy Grant Program was initiated by the Legislature in 1985. The grant provides up to 50 percent of the operating budget of a generic homeless shelter facility or homeless voucher program. The program is open to government agencies or private for-profit and non-profit agencies. These funds provide a consistent funding source on an annual basis for many of the smaller emergency programs.
