Commerce Wins National Award For WIFrontDoor

Wisconsin residents now have access to a national award winning housing locator system. At the recent 2005 Homeless Management Information Systems (HMIS) Conference sponsored by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in St. Louis, Missouri, the Wisconsin Department of Commerce (Commerce) was honored with a national HMIS Innovation award on September 14. The award was for the implementation of our affordable rental housing website, www.wifrontdoorhousing.org.

This website now lists thousands of affordable housing rentals in a searchable database that is available throughout Wisconsin to anyone having Internet access. The site is completely free to both property owners and managers to advertise their rental units, and to those looking for an affordable place to live.

The citation reads "The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development wishes to recognize the outstanding achievement in the field of HMIS implementation and innovation by the award recipient. This award commemorates the contribution to making the HMIS Initiative a success locally and nationally."

For the past several weeks, WIFrontDoor staff has been consulting with the Louisiana Housing Authority to quickly implement a similar site to assist with the critical housing needs of Katrina victims. These efforts will result in a long term affordable housing website for Louisiana, and potentially a larger region, that mirrors WIFrontDoor.
