June 2005
Hessen Delegation Visiting Wisconsin

A delegation from Wisconsin's sister-state of Hessen in Germany will be visiting Madison and Milwaukee June 16-17. The 10-person delegation will be led by Mr. Bernd Abeln, Vice Minister of Economics in the Hessen Ministry of Economics, Transport, Urban and Regional Development. The delegation is focusing on strengthening ties between Wisconsin and Hessen biotech industries. The group will be visiting WARF, the UW Research Park, and the MG&E Innovation Center while in Madison.

The delegation will be hosting a reception for members of the biotechnology community on June 16. In the Milwaukee area they will visit Johnson Controls and Shunk Graphite Technology, a Hessen-headquartered firm with an operation in Menomonee Falls. After the stop in Wisconsin, the group will join a larger Hessen delegation participating in the BIO 2005 trade show in Philadelphia. Wisconsin and Hessen will be coordinating a breakfast event at BIO to introduce participants to a wider audience.

Wisconsin and Hessen have used previous years' BIO trade shows as a way to introduce industry participants from their respective states and encourage trans-Atlantic cooperation. The two states have also used the MEDICA Trade Show, held every November in Düsseldorf, Germany, as another way to link equipment suppliers in the biotechnology field. The Hessen government has made space available in the Hessen pavilion for Wisconsin exhibitors. This year's show will be held November 16-19. For information on meeting members of the delegation or exhibiting at MEDICA, contact Brad Schneider, ph: (920) 420-1796, bschneider@commerce.state.wi.us.
