Village of Suring Receives PF and PFED Awards

The Village of Suring received Community Development Public Facilities (CDBG-PF) and Community Development Public Facilities for Economic Development (CDBG-PFED) grants totaling $844,000.  The funds will enable the Village to:  aid an expanding industry by creating the appropriate infrastructure to encourage industrial expansion; meet new EPA guidelines regarding arsenic levels in the water; and provide a new facility for the library, Village offices and a learning center.

Diversified Woodcraft, the only remaining major employer in the area, employs 77 people, and will expand its facility and add 17 positions after the improved water supply and pressure services are made available to the plant.  If this expansion had not taken place, the company would have had to move this operation to its headquarters in Pennsylvania.  However, company officials note that Diversified Woodcraft values the quality of the workforce in the area and wanted to keep the plant at Suring.

In light of recent plant closings in the area, the Village is planning ahead to minimize future closings and also develop a trained workforce.  This planning is reflected in the Village's modifications of a proposed library to include a workforce development training center.  The Village will incorporate the center in the library that can be used for employment training as well as for job seeking, believing that a trained workforce will help attract new businesses.

At the groundbreaking ceremony held last month at Suring, Jay Tousey, village president, accepted a ceremonial check presented by Commerce Grants Specialist Sandy Herfel and thanked the Department of Commerce for this grant.  He was also appreciative of the part the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources played in facilitating the well project.
