Governor Doyle Announces $75 Million in Additional Flood Relief
For Immediate Release: June 11, 2009 MADISON - Governor Jim Doyle today announced that Wisconsin will receive an additional $75 million from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development through its Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. The emergency funding will support Wisconsin's long-term recovery from the 2008 floods, and supplements a $49 million award the state received in 2008. "Wisconsin sustained significant damage from the 2008 floods, the worst in our state's history, and our citizens and businesses are rebuilding with sprit and determination," Governor Doyle said. "I worked hard with our federal delegation to bring additional funding to Wisconsin so that we can continue our recovery efforts." The Department of Commerce (Commerce) administers the Small Cities CDBG Program. Communities will assess their needs and apply to Commerce for assistance. The agency will process applications as expeditiously as possible. Commerce is awaiting further details on program requirements and guidelines. Earlier this week, Governor Doyle announced that 34 communities would share $39,220,410 in the first round of federal supplemental funds under the Community Development Block Grant Program. These funds will help the communities recover from damage sustained during the 2008 floods. In September 2008, Congress appropriated more than $6 billion in supplemental funding for necessary expenses related to disaster relief, long-term recovery, and restoration of infrastructure, housing and economic revitalization in areas affected by hurricanes, floods, and other natural disasters occurring during 2008. There were 76 major disasters that occurred in 2008 in 35 States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. These disasters included the Midwest floods, Hurricanes Gustav and Ike, and the California wildfires. For more information on CDBG programs, contact Jim Frymark, Commerce, 608-266-2742. -30- |
